CSS files customise the appearance of Thunderbird’s user interface
The userChrome.css file isn’t there by default, so you must create it. To do this:
1. Open xplorer2 or explorer and Navigate to your Thunderbird profile folder:
(MAKE SURE HIDDEN FILES ARE SHOWN)
- VISTA: C:\users\[User Name]\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.default
- XP / 2000: C:\Documents and Settings\[User Name]\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.default
2. Open the folder called “chrome”
3. Create a new file — (In xporer2: select F7 or right click an empty spot, and choose “new file”.)
4. Name it: userchrome.css
* To open and edit the userchrome.css file: double click.

A way to not have to specify different paths for Vista and XP is tell people to type in the %appdata%/Thunderbird/Profiles/xxxxx.default path.
